WizardWorld Spotlight on Blade TV Series

The Blade TV series will debut on Spike on June 28 with a 2-hour pilot movie. Last weekend's WizardWorld LA convention featured a panel on the series, and included an appearance by one of the show's consuilting producers, comics writer Geoff Johns.

Classic TV on your PC!

Last week, AOL introduced a new site that allows you to watch classic Warner Bros. TV shows for free right on your computer. There's over 2 dozen shows to watch, too many to list here, but here's a list of those that fit the theme of my blogperfectly:
  • Beetlejuice (cartoon)
  • Freakazoid
  • Histeria
  • Lois and Clark
  • New Adventures of Batman (1977 Saturday morning cartoon featuring the voices of Adam West and Burt Ward, as well as Bat-Mite!)
  • Pinky and the Brain
  • V (the aliens are our friends!)
  • Wonder Woman (Lynda Carter in her spandex glory)
Make sure you have Windows Media player 10, a little patience for the downloads -- and enjoy!

More Moore

Does anyone else see the hypocrisy of Alan Moore? I mean I love (most of) the guy's work, but does anyone who cares NOT know that he wrote V for Vendetta, the graphic novel that is the basis for the film that opened this week? Increasingly unhappy with result of Hollywood adaptations of his work (From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Constantine), and the fact that producer Joel Silver wrongly claimed Moore endorsed the script for V, he had his name removed from the credits of the film.

Ironically (or perhaps not), more non-comics people now know that Moore wrote the original V for Vendetta. The writer has done an unprecedented amount of mainstream media interviews talking about his work and how he does NOT endorse the movie version of V for Vendetta. Even the review of the movie in this week's Philadephia Inquirer mentioned it.

In the past week, Moore has done a TV interview on the BBC (see video link below), was the focus of a lengthy article in last Sunday's New York Times, and is featured in another interview on MTV.com (MTV?! How much more mainstream can you get?), not to mention the March issue of Giant magazine (a much longer version of the interview is featured on the comics blog, The Beat: Part 1; Part 2) How many people who weren't comics fans knew Alan Moore wrote the comic version of From Hell or League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which feartured his name in the credits of the movie versions. Interestingly, V seems to be the first Moore adaptation that may actually be considered to be pretty good. All of the articles/interviews are very good by the way, and well-worth reading.

So while the cynic in me calls Moore a hypocrite here, it's also important to note that everyone of these interviews prominently features Moore talking about his newest comic work -- "Lost Girls" a pornographic comic featuring the heroines of Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, surely a pitch that piques the interest of non-comic readers, while at the same time scaring off Hollywood.

So remember, the movie version of V for Vendetta, the best Moore-to-movie adaptation yet, is not endorsed by Alan Moore. Got that?

Tom Cruise vs. South Park?

Last Wednesday, a rerun of the "Trapped in the Closet" episode of Comedy Central's South Park, which spoofed Scientology in general and Tom Cruise in particular (and led this week to the quitting of Isaac Hayes, the long-time voice of chef and a Scientologist) was pulled at the last minute and substituted with an eight-year old episode.

Rumors are that Tom Cruise himself had something to do with it -- threatening to do no promotion for the upcoming Mission Impossible 3, which is owned by the same company that owns Comedy Central.

Cartoon Network Announces Superhero-Related Plans

During a press conference to discuss its upcoming schedule, Cartoon Network spoke of several comic-book based projects:

  • Justice League Unlimited will conclude its run in April with a 2-part part series finale. Read about the final new episodes here.
  • Teen Titans has already concluded its series run, but will return in a TV movie (and Direct-to-DVD release) this Fall called Teen Titans Tokyo, with the following description:
When a high-tech ninja attacks Titans Tower, Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven and Beast Boy spring into action. Robin finds out the ninja was sent by a mysterious and menacing Japanese criminal known as Brushogun, and the Teen Titans travel to Tokyo to track the villain down.
  • A new Legion of Superheroes cartoon is in the works, though not yet officially announced or titled. Superboy will apparently also be featured n this cartoon, despite previous rumors that it would feature Supergirl (as in the yet-to-air Justice League Unlimited episode). It also appears this series will first air on the heir to Kids WB (Kids CW?). This series will not be a part of the previously established continuity that started with Batman: the Animated Series and concluded with Justice League Unlimited.
  • Episodes of The Batman that previously only aired on Kids WB will debut on Cartoon Network this summer.

DC is not the only comic-book universe featured in Cartoon Network’s upcoming plans, as Marvel, makes its cable network presence known:

  • Spider-Man (yes, a live action movie on CARTOON Network) will air this year
  • A new Fantastic Four cartoon will air within the next year
  • Marvel’s new series of direct-to-DVD movies will air on the Cartoon Network, starting with Ultimate Avengers on April 15.
  • Ultimate Avengers 2 and Iron Man will debut n the fall, and Dr. Strange will likely to appear in 2007.
